Meta Trak DEADLOCK
Key Features
-
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK system features category S5 insurance-approved tracking at its core. Category S5 is the industry's highest level of stolen vehicle tracking system accredited by Thatcham and approved by all UK vehicle insurers. The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK 's tracking capabilities include 24/7/365 professional theft monitoring, live tracking, journey logging, and driver behaviour scoring.
See more information about tracking in the general features section.
-
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK features advanced engine immobilisation capabilities. The system is preconfigured from the factory for ‘Automatic proximity-based engine immobilisation’ aka No Tag, No Start.
The automatic engine immobilisation works in conjunction with Meta Trak’s ID tag. When the ID tag is out of range of the vehicle, the immobiliser will arm, meaning your vehicle is always immobilised when not in use and when you are away from it. When the ID tag comes back into range, the immobiliser automatically disarms and allows the vehicle to be started. Automatic aftermarket immobilisation prevents many types of modern digital theft methods.
Please see more detailed information about how the automatic engine immobilisation works, and the available immobiliser configuration modes for Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK PRO+ below.
*Please note, immobiliser configuration by default will be set as No Tag, No Start. Customers can either inform the installer of there configuration preference on the day of installation or contact Meta Trak who can send a change of configuration over-the-air at any point.
No Tag, No Start
(proximity-based immobilisation)
The most popular configuration for any Meta Trak immobiliser is the "No Tag, No Start" option, where the immobiliser arms and disarms automatically based on the proximity of the Meta Trak ID tag. After the vehicle's ignition is switched off, the system waits for the Meta Trak ID tag to go out of range and then arms the engine immobiliser. The immobiliser disarms when the ID tag is in close proximity, allowing for seamless vehicle startup without requiring any user interaction.
No Tag, ONE Start
(Concerns surrounding forced entry)
The "No Tag, One Start" configuration from Meta Trak allows the vehicle to be started once without the Meta Trak ID tag. This can prevent violent thieves from entering your home to force you to start the vehicle. If the vehicle is stolen, the immobiliser prevents a second start without the ID tag, helping to recover the vehicle away from your home.
Button Press
(Automatic arming, manual disarming)
Meta Trak's 'Button Press' configuration automatically arms the engine immobiliser 60 seconds after the vehicle's ignition is turned off. To disarm, the driver needs to press the central button on the Meta Trak ID tag. The immobiliser doesn't rely on the ID tag's proximity and can be disarmed from a distance on approach. A successful disarm is indicated by 6 rapid flashes of the red LED on the Meta Trak ID tag. This configuration is rare but useful in situations where there is difficulty creating enough distance between the ID tag and the vehicle's system for reliable system arming. Also used as extra security as a physical input is needed for disarming.
Remote Immobilisation Only
(immobilisation can only be done remotely)
In this setup, the immobiliser can only be armed and disarmed remotely using the Meta Trak mobile app or web-based portal. The Meta Trak ID tag is not needed for the immobiliser and there is no automatic immobilisation. The immobilisation of the vehicle is done manually but remotely.
To arm the immobiliser, the customer uses the Meta Trak customer app to send a remote immobiliser arm/block command. To disarm the immobiliser, they simply send a disarm/unblock command.
If a vehicle is remotely immobilised, it cannot be started unless an unblock command is sent from a Meta Trak platform. This setup is commonly used for fleet tracking systems paired with an engine immobiliser.
It's common among business fleet operators and vehicle leasing companies, enabling them to immobilise their vehicles remotely in case of non-payment from customers. It's also used by plant machinery hiring businesses to protect vehicles from theft.
-
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK system allows you to remotely immobilise your vehicle's engine from anywhere in the world using your smartphone or a web browser.
Remote immobilisation is a significant security benefit for your vehicle. This feature can be especially useful in high-risk environments where your vehicle's key and ID tags may be at risk of theft. For example, if you leave your vehicle's key and Meta Trak ID tags at home and your house is broken into while you're on holiday, thieves may potentially be able to start your vehicle by presenting these to the vehicle, as the system can see the ID tag and disarm the engine immobiliser.
However, before you leave for your holiday, sending a remote immobilisation command to the vehicle will prevent thieves from starting your vehicle, even if they have the keys and ID tags. This is because sending a remote immobilisation command to the vehicle instructs the system to ignore the presence of an ID tag and keep the immobiliser armed.
Sending a remote engine immobilisation command is what we call 'DEADLOCKING' the vehicle
-
Meta Trak's driver recognition system uses a small battery-operated ID tag that can be attached to your vehicle's keys. This tag emits a signal that the tracking unit detects to determine if an authorised driver is present (you are the only one with access to the ID tag). When the vehicle's ignition is turned on, the system checks for the ID tag. If the tag is found, it indicates that the authorised ID tag is present, likely meaning the authorised driver is present.
If the system fails to detect the ID tag, an alert will be sent to the secure operating centre. Personnel from the monitoring centre will then contact you via phone to confirm the status of the vehicle. Meta Trak's driver recognition system also includes car-jacking alerts. Throughout the entire journey, the system monitors the presence of the ID. If you are carjacked and the system detects that the ID tag is lost, it will alert the monitoring centre.
Meta Trak’s ID tags use Bluetooth Low Energy technology to communicate with the system. The battery life of the ID tags is approximately 12-18 months before replacement is needed.
-
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK system utilises Meta Trak’s wireless link architecture technology. This technology allows all the components of the Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK system to seamlessly communicate with each other wirelessly.
This wireless communication capability, allows the system’s immobiliser to link with the main tracking device without a direct, wired connection. The tracking device serves as the central control unit, sending commands over the mobile network to the immobilisers wirelessly. This setup provides a significant security advantage, as the immobiliser and tracking device can be installed in separate locations within the vehicle. For example, the tracking device could be placed in the boot, while the immobiliser is positioned in the engine bay. This means that even if thieves manage to bypass the engine immobiliser, they won't automatically locate the tracking device. Since the tracking device and immobiliser communicate wirelessly and are located in different areas of the vehicle, they cannot be easily traced through a shared hardwired connection, setting this system apart from others on the market.
-
Meta Trak’s Emergency Engine Unblock Procedure allows you to unblock the vehicle's engine immobiliser without needing a GSM connection (mobile phone signal or Internet access). If your Meta Trak engine immobiliser is in a ‘blocked’ state and you have no mobile phone signal to send an ‘unblock’ command to your system, you can use the Emergency Engine Unblock procedure to unblock it.
To use the Emergency Engine Unblock feature in the Meta Trak app, you need to create a secure digital key (created within the app). This key is encrypted and stored only on your device and is unique to your system. Once set up, you can use it to communicate directly with your engine immobiliser to unblock it without needing a mobile phone signal or internet access.
How does it work?
Once your secure key is created, you can start the unblocking procedure in the Meta Trak app. When you start this procedure, your smartphone will broadcast your unique secure key via Bluetooth. This broadcasted key contains the engine immobiliser unblock command, allowing you to communicate this command to the engine immobiliser, without relying on the mobile phone network. It's important to note that the Emergency Engine Unblock procedure is only used to unblock the engine immobiliser and cannot be used to block the engine immobiliser.
Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK
General Features
-
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK system is monitored 24/7/365 via Meta Trak’s Secure Operating Centre. Meta Trak uses a National Security Inspectorate (NSI) approved centre for the professional handling of alerts and stolen vehicle tracking. This shows that the teams have relevant technical experience and are working to International, British Standards, and NSI Codes of Practice. Should your system generate any alert, personnel from the monitoring centre will call the number associated with your account immediately to confirm with you the status of the vehicle. If you confirm that your vehicle has been stolen, the team will liaise directly with police forces to provide them with live location data to recover your vehicle. This service is available throughout Europe.
-
With Meta Trak’s modern smartphone app, it has never been easier to track your vehicle's location in real-time. See your vehicle's last updated position as soon as you open the Meta Trak app or send a position request command to receive your vehicle's live position. Keep the Meta Trak app open to watch your vehicle's live movements with Google Maps integration.
-
The Meta Trak app will log all your journeys for a year. A journey begins when your vehicle's ignition switches on, the vehicle moves, and ends when the vehicle's ignition switches off. This journey log can then be accessed inside the Meta Trak app with Google Maps integration. In addition to logging your journeys, the system can also monitor and score your driving behaviour. You can easily view your scored journeys from 0-100 in the journey log, thanks to the system's built-in gyro and accelerometer.
-
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK system utilises a multi-frequency GNSS receiver, providing ultra-accurate and reliable positioning data from the GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo satellite constellations, offering greater resistance to jamming.
Assisted GPS helps the tracking device acquire satellites faster via an internet link rather than being processed onboard, improving accuracy, speed, and reliability. This feature allows for more flexibility in installation, as it enables the devices to be installed in areas of the vehicle that would otherwise have navigational performance constraints, again aiding the covertness of any installation.
GSM can also be used to triangulate the vehicle's whereabouts using cell-based positioning.
-
Meta Trak's telematics devices utilise the latest generation Quad Band modem and a globally roaming SIM to ensure an optimal network connection for communications. This type of connectivity allows the device to connect to multiple mobile networks at the same time, switching seamlessly between the strongest signal available in the device's location. Automatic switching from network to network enables reliable data transmission and reception, even in areas with poor signal from a specific mobile network provider.
-
Should the position of your vehicle change while the ignition is off, such as if your vehicle is being towed, the system will send an alert to the secure operating centre. A team member will then call you to confirm the status of the vehicle. Additionally, a push notification alert of the event will be sent to you through the Meta Trak app.
-
If the battery of your vehicle is disconnected or if power is lost to the tracking unit, the system will send an alert to the secure control room. In the event of power loss to the tracking unit, it will switch to its internal battery backup to ensure continuous operation. Additionally, a push notification alert of the event will be sent to the Meta Trak app.
-
If your vehicle's battery falls below a pre-set threshold (11.6V) the system will send a push notification through to the Meta Trak app. You can also view and monitor your vehicle's live battery voltage in the Meta Trak app.
-
The tracking device load on the battery is virtually undetectable, but the device is still always reachable, i.e., not in a deep sleep state.
Depending on your specific Meta Trak security system, the quiescent drain is miniscule, at between 1 and 4mA (0.004A). To put that into context, a 100Ah battery (at 80% usable capacity) would take 28 months to drain with a 4mA load.
-
Firmware over the air (FOTA) allows your security systems operating system to be updated over the air, allowing enhancements to be deployed to existing customers.
-
For customer peace of mind, Meta Trak's insurance-approved security systems are actively monitored to ensure correct operation. As part of Thatcham's criteria for 'Vehicle Tracking Systems', Meta Trak will monitor and respond to any problems with your system that are reported through the system's daily health report.

FAQs
-
Meta Trak's S5 DEADLOCK is a combined vehicle security system developed to address the challenges of modern vehicle theft techniques. The system features Thatcham category S5 insurance-approved tracking as an automatic proximity-based engine immobiliser, the engine can also be remotely operated via the Meta Trak app. The system's separate components communicate wirelessly using Meta Trak's wireless link architecture. This unique architecture allows each part of the system to be placed in different areas of the vehicle without needing physical connections, something that sets it apart from its competitors, athis is because hardwired combined security system are easily found and removed by thieves. The "combined security" offered by the system provides a strong defence against various theft methods such as relay attacks, key cloning, OBD attack/CAN injection, and more.
The 2 main levels of security include –
1 - Thatcham and Insurance-approved Category S5 Stolen Vehicle Tracking
Category S5 trackers fall under Thatcham's Category S5: Vehicle Tracking Systems. Insurance companies require them to be installed on high-value vehicles prone to theft. S5 trackers provide round-the-clock monitoring, theft support, live tracking, automatic driver recognition, and more.
The most significant advantage of S5 trackers is their automatic driver recognition feature which quickly alerts the monitoring centre of any unauthorised movements of the vehicle, such as during a theft.
If a vehicle is stolen, the monitoring centre confirms the theft with the owner and professionally liaises with the police to assist with the vehicle's recovery, using direct links to police control rooms.
2 - Engine Immobilisation
Automatic engine immobilisation
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK comes with advanced engine immobilisation capabilities. The system is preconfigured at the factory for "Automatic proximity-based engine immobilisation," also known as "No Tag, No Start."
The automatic engine immobilisation works in conjunction with Meta Trak's ID tag. When the ID tag is out of range of the vehicle, the immobiliser arms, which means your vehicle is always immobilised when not in use or when you are away from it. When the ID tag comes back into range, the immobiliser automatically disarms and allows the vehicle to be started. This aftermarket immobilisation system helps prevent various modern digital theft methods.
Remote engine immobilisation (DEADLOCK)
Sending a remote engine immobilisation command is what we call "DEADLOCKING" the vehicle.

A subscription is necessary for your Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK system for it to operate. All telematics products (tracking systems) incur costs as they transmit data and communicate over the mobile network.
Airtime:
Think of a tracking system as like a mobile phone and its airtime plan; you pay for the handset/tracking device, as well as for the data that the handset/tracking device transmits over the mobile network to the network providers.
In our case, your subscription pays the network providers to carry your tracking system's data across their network. Your subscription is slightly more expensive than a normal airtime plan. However, a modern tracking system usually utilises multi-roaming, so it transmits data over the network provider with the best connection in a given area. Your tracking device is not tied to a single network provider.
Theft Monitoring:
When you subscribe to a tracking system, you are paying for the 'airtime' for your hardware to use the mobile network to transmit data, as well as for 24/7/365 theft monitoring.
If your tracking system is Thatcham-approved (Insurance-approved), it will include 24/7/365 theft monitoring as standard. The subscription costs for these types of products are higher than for a device that is simply used to transmit location data, such as a fleet or self-monitored type of product.
Your subscription cost covers both the cost of 'airtime' and a professional theft support service. This theft support service is available 24 hours a day to notify you of the potential theft of your vehicle.
In the event of an alert being generated by your vehicle tracking system, it is sent to the monitoring centre. Personnel at the monitoring centre are then notified on screen of the alert, and all alerts are responded to by a telephone call to the vehicle owner/driver. If a theft is confirmed, monitoring centre personnel will use direct lines into police control rooms to coordinate the recovery of your vehicle.
Summary:
As you can see, the professional theft monitoring service included with Thatcham/Insurance-approved tracking systems commands a higher subscription price compared to ordinary tracking devices used solely for locational purposes.
A professional theft support service is mandatory for a tracking system to be accredited as a Thatcham category S7 or S5 product. Both categories are used by vehicle insurers to lower their risk concerning vehicle crime and are also known as insurance-approved vehicle tracking systems.
