Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC
The new Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC is the next generation of vehicle tracking and immobilisation system from the vehicle security experts, Meta Trak.
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC features Meta Trak’s next-generation push-to-start immobilisation whereby vehicle immobilisation is achieved through immobilisation of the vehicle's start button. Developed in-house by Meta Trak, the DEADLOCK E-TEC security system has been uniquely designed for hybrid and electric technology, although it can be used for normal ICE (internal combustion engine)-only applications.
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC utilises Meta Trak’s newly accredited Thatcham CAT2 immobiliser, used uniquely to achieve immobilisation of a vehicle's start button. The most significant advantage of Meta Trak’s newly developed push-to-start immobilisation is that it provides a way to immobilise modern electrified powertrain technologies without causing faults that may appear on the vehicle’s dash display, a common issue with other forms of immobilisation on modern vehicles. The DEADLOCK E-TEC is effective at preventing a variety of modern digital theft methods such as relay attacks, key cloning, OBD attacks/CAN injections, and more.
It is important to note, however, that the Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC system is a compatibility-only product. To determine if your specific vehicle is supported, please consult our ‘compatibility list’ using the button below.
If you need any assistance with this product or have questions regarding its compatibility with your vehicle, please feel free to get in touch, and we’ll be happy to help.

The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC system has advanced immobilisation capabilities. The system is preconfigured from the factory for ‘Automatic proximity-based immobilisation’ (No Tag, No Start), similar to many other systems. However, it immobilises a vehicle in a unique way by disabling the use of the vehicle’s push-to-start button, unlike other systems that interrupt the starter circuit or ECU ignition. This type of immobilisation has several benefits, such as not creating faults on the vehicle's display when the immobiliser is in a blocked state. Additionally, the system utilises a Thatcham-accredited CAT2 immobiliser, as immobilising most vehicle start buttons requires the interruption of two circuits. Another key feature of Meta Trak’s push-to-start immobiliser is that the ignition cannot be turned on when the immobiliser is in a blocked state, unlike other types of immobilisation where thieves can still turn on the vehicle's ignition, potentially leading to OBD port compromise attacks to steal personal data, cause damage to the ECU, or even clone new keys, after the vehicle’s star button has been immobilised it doesn’t respond to being pressed and thus doesn’t allow the vehicle ignition to be switched on.
The DEADLOCK E-TEC’s push-to-start immobilisation works automatically and in conjunction with Meta Trak’s ID tag. When the ID tag is out of range of the vehicle, the immobiliser will arm, meaning your vehicle is always immobilised when not in use and when you are away from it. When the ID tag comes back into range, the immobiliser automatically disarms and allows the vehicle to be started. Automatic aftermarket immobilisation prevents many types of modern digital theft methods such as relay attacks, OBD hacking/CAN Injection, key cloning, and more.
Please see more detailed information about how the automatic immobilisation works, and the available immobiliser configuration modes for Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC below.
*Please note, immobiliser configuration by default will be set as No Tag, No Start. Customers can either inform the installer of there configuration preference on the day of installation or contact Meta Trak who can send a change of configuration over-the-air at any point.
No Tag, No Start
(proximity-based immobilisation)
The most popular configuration for any Meta Trak immobiliser is the "No Tag, No Start" option, where the immobiliser arms and disarms automatically based on the proximity of the Meta Trak ID tag. After the vehicle's ignition is switched off, the system waits for the Meta Trak ID tag to go out of range, after which it blocks the immobiliser 90 seconds later. The immobiliser only disarms when the ID tag is in close proximity to the vehicle, allowing for seamless vehicle startup without requiring any user interaction.
No Tag, One Start
(Concerns surrounding forced entry)
The "No Tag, One Start" configuration from Meta Trak allows the vehicle to be started once without the Meta Trak ID tag being present. This feature can prevent violent thieves from entering your home to force you to start the vehicle if they cannot. With the No Tag, One Start immobiliser configuration, if your vehicle is stolen without the ID tag present, the immobiliser allows one start but doesn’t allow a second. This ensures that your vehicle and the thieves are located away from your address before the vehicle is automatically immobilised. This stops thieves from driving it any further, and by this point, your system would have already alerted Meta Trak’s secure operating centre, and professional theft support would be underway to help recover the vehicle.
Button Press
(Automatic arming, manual disarming)
Meta Trak's 'Button Press' configuration automatically arms the immobiliser 50 seconds after the vehicle's ignition is turned off. To disarm, the driver needs to press the central button on the Meta Trak ID tag. The ‘button press’ configuration doesn't rely on the ID tag's proximity and can be disarmed from a distance by pressing the central button on the ID tag on approach to the vehicle. A successful disarm is indicated by 6 rapid flashes of the red LED on the Meta Trak ID tag. This configuration is rare but useful in situations where there is difficulty creating enough distance between the ID tag and the vehicle's system for reliable system arming but it’s also used as extra security as a physical input is needed for disarming.
Remote Immobilisation Only
(immobilisation can only be done remotely)
In this setup, the immobiliser can only be armed and disarmed remotely using the Meta Trak mobile app or web-based portal. The Meta Trak ID tag is not needed for the immobiliser and there is no automatic immobilisation. The immobilisation of the vehicle is done manually but remotely.
To arm the immobiliser, the customer uses the Meta Trak customer app to send a remote immobiliser arm/block command. To disarm the immobiliser, they simply send a disarm/unblock command.
If a vehicle is remotely immobilised, it cannot be started unless an unblock command is sent from a Meta Trak platform. This setup is commonly used for fleet and plant applications when a Meta Trak tracking system is paired with their engine immobiliser for when asset tracking and remote immobilisation capabilities are needed.
It's common among business fleet operators and vehicle leasing companies too, enabling them to immobilise their vehicles remotely in case of non-payment from customers. It's also used by plant machinery hiring businesses to protect vehicles from theft.
-
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC system allows you to remotely immobilise your vehicle from anywhere in the world using your smartphone or a web browser.
Remote immobilisation is a significant security benefit for your vehicle. This feature can be especially useful in high-risk environments where your vehicle's key and ID tags may be at risk of theft. For example, if you leave your vehicle's key and Meta Trak ID tags at home and your house is broken into while you're on holiday, thieves may potentially be able to start your vehicle by presenting these to the vehicle, as ordinarily if the system can see the ID tag it disarms the immobiliser.
However, before you leave for your holiday, sending a remote immobilisation command to the vehicle will prevent thieves from starting your vehicle, even if they have the keys and ID tags. This is because sending a remote immobilisation command to the vehicle instructs the system to ignore the presence of an ID tag and keep the immobiliser armed regardless.
Sending a remote engine immobilisation command is what we call 'DEADLOCKING' the vehicle.
-
Meta Trak's driver recognition system uses a small battery-operated ID tag that can be attached to your vehicle's keys. This tag emits a signal that the tracking unit detects to determine if an authorised driver is present (as you are the only one with access to the ID tag). When the vehicle's ignition is turned on, the system checks for the ID tag. If the tag is found, it indicates that the authorised ID tag is present, likely meaning the authorised driver is present.
If the system fails to detect the ID tag, an alert will be sent to the secure operating centre. Personnel from the monitoring centre will then contact you via phone to confirm the status of the vehicle. Meta Trak's driver recognition system also includes car-jacking alerts. Throughout the entire journey, the system monitors the presence of the ID. If you are carjacked the system will detect the ID tag is missing and send an alert to the monitoring centre.
Meta Trak’s ID tags use Bluetooth Low Energy technology to communicate with the system. The battery life of the ID tags is approximately 12-18 months before replacement is needed.
-
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC system utilises Meta Trak’s wireless link architecture technology. This technology allows all the components of the Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC system to seamlessly communicate with each other wirelessly.
This wireless communication capability, allows the system’s immobiliser to link with the main tracking device without a direct, wired connection. The tracking device serves as the central control unit, receiving commands over the mobile network and sending them wirelessly to the immobiliser via Bluetooth. This setup provides a significant security advantage, as the immobiliser and tracking device can be installed in separate areas of the vehicle. For example, the tracking device could be placed in the boot, while the immobiliser is positioned in the engine bay. This means that even if thieves manage to locate the engine immobiliser, they won't automatically find the tracking device. Since the tracking device and immobiliser communicate wirelessly and are positioned in different areas of the vehicle, they cannot be easily traced through a shared hardwired connection, setting this system apart from others on the market.
-
Meta Trak’s Emergency immobiliser Unblock Procedure allows you to unblock the vehicle's immobiliser without needing a GSM connection (mobile phone signal or Internet access). If your Meta Trak DEADLOCK E-TEC immobiliser is in a ‘blocked’ state and you have no mobile phone signal to send an ‘unblock’ command to your system, you can use the Emergency Immobiliser Unblock procedure to unblock it.
To use the Emergency Immobiliser Unblock feature in the Meta Trak app, you need to create a secure digital key (created within the app). This key is encrypted and stored only on your device and is unique to your system. Once set up, you can use it to communicate directly with your immobiliser to unblock it without needing a mobile phone signal or internet access.
How does it work?
Once your secure key is created, you can start the unblocking procedure in the Meta Trak app. When you start this procedure, your smartphone will broadcast your unique secure key via Bluetooth. This broadcasted key contains the immobiliser unblock command, allowing you to communicate this command to the immobiliser, without relying on the mobile phone network. It's important to note that the Emergency Immobiliser Unblock procedure is only used to unblock the immobiliser and cannot be used to block it.
-
All Meta Trak tracking solutions include a modern and user-friendly app. You can log in to view real-time and up-to-date data from your vehicle using Meta Trak's mobile app or through a web browser on Meta Trak's online portal. The smartphone app is available for both IOS and Android users.
Meta Trak DEADLOCK E-TEC
General Features
-
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC system is monitored 24/7/365 via Meta Trak’s Secure Operating Centre. Meta Trak uses a National Security Inspectorate (NSI) approved centre for the professional handling of alerts and stolen vehicle tracking. This shows that the teams have relevant technical experience and are working to International, British Standards, and NSI Codes of Practice. Should your system generate any alert, personnel from the monitoring centre will call the number associated with your account immediately to confirm with you the status of the vehicle. If you confirm that your vehicle has been stolen, the team will liaise directly with police forces to provide them with live location data to recover your vehicle. This service is available throughout Europe.
-
With Meta Trak’s modern smartphone app, it has never been easier to track your vehicle's location in real-time. See your vehicle's last updated position as soon as you open the Meta Trak app or send a position request command to receive your vehicle's live position. Keep the Meta Trak app open to watch your vehicle's live movements with Google Maps integration.
-
The Meta Trak app will log all your journeys for a year. A journey begins when your vehicle's ignition switches on, the vehicle moves, and ends when the vehicle's ignition switches off. This journey log can then be accessed inside the Meta Trak app with Google Maps integration. In addition to logging your journeys, the system can also monitor and score your driving behaviour. You can easily view your scored journeys from 0-100 in the journey log, thanks to the system's built-in gyro and accelerometer.
-
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC system utilises the latest multi-frequency GNSS receiver technology, capable of achieving positioning accuracy to within 3 meters. It provides ultra-accurate and reliable positioning data from the GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo satellite constellations, offering greater resistance to jamming.
Assisted GPS helps the tracking device acquire satellites faster via an internet link rather than being processed onboard, improving accuracy, speed, and reliability. This feature allows for more flexibility in installation, as it enables the devices to be installed in areas of the vehicle that would otherwise have navigational performance constraints, again aiding the covertness of any installation.
GSM can also be used to triangulate the vehicle's whereabouts using cell-based positioning.
-
Meta Trak's telematics devices utilise the latest generation Quad Band modem and a globally roaming SIM to ensure an optimal network connection for communications. This type of connectivity allows the device to connect to multiple mobile networks at the same time, switching seamlessly between the strongest signal available in the device's location. Automatic switching from network to network enables reliable data transmission and reception, even in areas with poor signal from a specific mobile network provider.
-
Should the position of your vehicle change while the ignition is off, such as if your vehicle is being towed, the system will send an alert to the secure operating centre. A team member will then call you to confirm the status of the vehicle. Additionally, a push notification alert of the event will be sent to you through the Meta Trak app.
-
If the battery of your vehicle is disconnected or if power is lost to the tracking unit, the system will send an alert to the secure control room. In the event of power loss to the tracking unit, it will switch to its internal battery backup to ensure continuous operation. Additionally, a push notification alert of the event will be sent to the Meta Trak app.
-
If your vehicle's battery falls below a pre-set threshold (11.6V) the system will send a push notification through to the Meta Trak app. You can also view and monitor your vehicle's live battery voltage in the Meta Trak app.
-
The tracking device load on the battery is virtually undetectable, but the device is still always reachable, i.e., not in a deep sleep state.
Depending on your specific Meta Trak security system, the quiescent drain is miniscule, at between 1 and 4mA (0.004A). To put that into context, a 100Ah battery (at 80% usable capacity) would take 28 months to drain with a 4mA load.
-
Firmware over the air (FOTA) allows your security systems operating system to be updated over the air, allowing enhancements to be deployed to existing customers.
-
For customer peace of mind, Meta Trak's insurance-approved security systems are actively monitored to ensure correct operation. As part of Thatcham's criteria for 'Vehicle Tracking Systems', Meta Trak will monitor and respond to any problems with your system that are reported through the system's daily health report.

Key Stand-Out Features and Benefits
Thatcham S5 Tracking: 24/7 professional monitoring, theft support, and recovery service. Thatcham category S5 tracking enables Meta Trak’s NSI-accredited secure operating centre to link into police control rooms, commanding greater authority responses from UK police forces. The faster and more professional the response to your vehicle’s theft, the greater the chances of a successful recovery.
Push-to-Start Immobiliser: The Meta Trak DEADLOCK E-TEC features Meta Trak’s new Push-to-Start immobilisation technology, marking the next generation of combined tracker and immobiliser vehicle security systems. The new immobiliser is Thatcham Cat 2 accredited as it utilises dual circuit immobilisation to deactivate your vehicles start/stop button. This new technology has many benefits, not least that it enables a clean way of immobilising usually difficult hybrid and electric powertrains without causing any faults. Due to the way this next-gen immobiliser works, when your vehicle is immobilised, thieves are also not able to turn the vehicles ignition on, a great benefit and one that stops thieves being able to code new keys or manipulate OEM software when attempting a theft, among other things.
Automatic Immobilisation: Your immobiliser is armed and disarmed automatically when your Meta Trak ID tag is nearby. No input from you is needed to arm and disarm your immobiliser, the process is completely passive. Aftermarket vehicle immobilisation protects against digital theft methods that exploit OEM (original equipment manufacturer) security flaws.
Remote Immobilisation: For additional security, you can DEADLOCK (Lockdown) your vehicle via your smartphone from anywhere. This prevents thieves from being able to start your car even if they have your Meta Trak ID tag.
Wireless Link Architecture: Your Meta DEADLOCK E-TEC hardware components link wirelessly, significantly improving covert installation and making it impossible for thieves to trace the shared, connected communication wiring found with all other similar competing security systems. This feature is often overlooked by customers but is one of the main reasons that Meta Trak has become the market leader in vehicle immobilisation technology. Being able to wirelessly link your security systems components provides greater flexibility for covert installation such as the tracker can be placed in one area of the vehicle and the immobiliser in another area. This ensures your vehicle security system isn’t found all wired together for easy removal of the tracker such as with all other similar systems on the market.
Live Tracking and Alerts: Monitor your vehicle’s location in real-time and receive alerts for unauthorised movement or battery issues. Encourage early warning and proactive responses to suspicious activity. Early warnings to potential theft events can significantly improve the chance of a successful recovery should a real theft occur.
Automatic Driver Recognition: The system identifies you as the authorised driver using a small signal-transmitting ID tag; the system alerts you if your vehicle moves without the ID tag. This process enables fast, proactive alerting if an unauthorised driver drives your vehicle.

FAQs
-
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC is the next generation of vehicle tracking and immobilisation system from the vehicle security experts, Meta Trak.
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC features Meta Trak’s next-generation push-to-start immobilisation whereby vehicle immobilisation is achieved through immobilisation of the vehicle start button. Developed in-house by Meta Trak, this security system has been uniquely designed for hybrid and electric technology, although it can be used for normal ICE applications too.
The main security features of the Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC are –
1. Thatcham category S5 insurance-approved tracking
The system is fully monitored 24/7/365 by Meta Trak’s SOC (secure operating centre). Any alerts the system may generate are sent directly to the SOC. After receiving an alert, personnel from the SOC will contact the vehicle owner immediately to confirm whether a theft has taken place. If theft is confirmed, Meta Trak’s SOC will provide the vehicle owner with professional theft support by liaising with and directing local police forces to the vehicle using data from the installed system.
2. Thatcham CAT2 push-to-start immobilisation
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC features a Thatcham CAT2 immobiliser, used uniquely to achieve immobilisation of a vehicle's start button. The most significant advantage of Meta Trak’s newly developed push-to-start immobilisation is that it provides a way to immobilise new powertrain technologies without causing faults. Many Hybrid and Electric vehicles are difficult to immobilise due to the fact they can start and drive on both ICE (internal combustion engines) and also electric power. Aftermarket vehicle security installation engineers have found ways to immobilise these vehicles but normally at the cost of multiple faults on the vehicle display, clearly visible to the vehicle owner/driver. The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC eliminates these problems by providing effective vehicle immobilisation without causing any faults. Not only does this provide a solution for new hybrid and electric vehicle and powertrain technologies but it can also be used for some ICE-only powered vehicles (compatibility dependant).
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC immobilises the vehicle start button automatically when the driver recognition ID tag is out of range of the vehicle (5-10m). To unblock the immobiliser and thus the vehicle's start button, the vehicle driver simply needs to bring the Meta Trak ID tag back into close proximity to the vehicle. This process is commonly called ‘No Tag, No Start’ as without the system's unique ID tag being present the new E-TEC immobiliser will stay blocked to prevent unauthorised starting of the vehicle.
Another added benefit to immobilising a vehicle's push-to-start button is that when it's immobilised the vehicle’s ignition cannot be switched on. This can help to prevent other modern theft methods such as OBD compromise, CAN injection, and Key cloning via the OBD port, and also stop thieves from stealing personal data stored within the vehicle On-Board Electronics modules.
3. Wireless Link Architecture
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC system offers a remarkable security advantage over competing systems through the implementation of Meta Trak’s cutting-edge wireless link architecture technology. This advanced technology facilitates seamless wireless communication among all elements of the system.
The wireless communication capability empowers the system’s immobiliser to establish a connection with the primary tracking device without the need for a direct, wired link. Serving as the central control unit, the tracking device receives commands over the mobile network and transmits them wirelessly to the immobiliser via Bluetooth.
This configuration delivers a substantial security benefit as it allows for the installation of the immobiliser and tracking device in separate areas of the vehicle. For instance, the tracking device could be discreetly placed in the boot while the immobiliser could be strategically positioned in the engine bay. This means that even if perpetrators manage to locate the engine immobiliser, they won't automatically discover the tracking device. A common problem with similar systems on the market is that thieves are able to locate the tracking device by tracing of the system shared hardwired connection.
The wireless communication and separate installation of the tracking device and immobiliser prevent easy tracing through a shared hardwired connection, distinguishing this system as a standout solution in the market.

The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC system shares many similarities with the standard S5 DEADLOCK system, but it features a significant difference. Both systems offer identical stolen vehicle tracking capabilities, but their immobilisation methods distinguish them from one another.
The standard Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK utilises a modern conventional single-circuit immobiliser that can be utilised in various ways, such as interrupting the starter circuit, ECU ignition, or other forms of immobilisation commonly employed by vehicle security installation engineers.
Conversely, the new Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK has been purposefully designed to immobilise the vehicle's start button. It incorporates Meta Trak's innovative push-to-start immobiliser, which stands out in the industry as it has recently received Thatcham's CAT2 compliance accreditation. The CAT2 immobiliser and Push-to-Start immobilisation offer numerous advantages, with the primary benefit being that this type of immobilisation does not generate any faults on the vehicle's dashboard or displays when the immobiliser is in a blocked state and an attempt is made to start the vehicle. This addresses a common issue with other forms of immobilisation used for new electrified powertrain technologies. The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC effectively eliminates these issues and delivers increased security performance with an entirely new approach. While developed in-house by Meta Trak to provide faultless immobilisation tailored specifically for hybrid and electric technologies, the Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC is also suitable for ICE (internal combustion engine)-only powered vehicles.
It is important to note, however, that the Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC system is a compatibility-only product. To determine if your specific vehicle is supported, please consult our ‘compatibility list’.
-
a subscription for your Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC system is necessary for the operation of the system/hardware. All telematics products (tracking systems) incur costs as they transmit data and communicate over the mobile network.
Airtime:
Think of a tracking system as like a mobile phone and its airtime plan; you pay for the handset/tracking device, as well as for the data that the handset/tracking device transmits over the mobile network to the network providers.
In our case, your subscription pays the network providers to carry your tracking system's data across their network. Your subscription is slightly more expensive than a normal airtime plan. However, a modern tracking system usually utilizes multi-roaming, so it transmits data over the network provider with the best connection in a given area. Your tracking device is not tied to a single network provider.
Theft Monitoring:
When you subscribe to a tracking system, you are paying for the 'airtime' for your hardware to use the mobile network to transmit data, as well as for 24/7/365 theft monitoring.
If your tracking system is Thatcham-approved (Insurance-approved), it will include 24/7/365 theft monitoring as standard. The subscription costs for these types of products are higher than for a device that is simply used to transmit location data, such as a fleet or self-monitored type of product.
Your subscription cost covers both the cost of 'airtime' and a professional theft support service. This theft support service is available 24 hours a day to notify you of the potential theft of your vehicle.
In the event of an alert being generated by your vehicle tracking system, it is sent to the monitoring centre. Personnel at the monitoring centre are then notified on screen of the alert, and all alerts are responded to by a telephone call to the vehicle owner/driver. If a theft is confirmed, monitoring centre personnel will use direct lines into police control rooms to coordinate the recovery of your vehicle.
Summary:
As you can see, the professional theft monitoring service included with Thatcham/Insurance-approved tracking systems commands a higher subscription price compared to ordinary tracking devices used solely for locational purposes.
A professional theft support service is mandatory for a tracking system to be accredited as a Thatcham category S7 or S5 product. Both categories are used by vehicle insurers to lower their risk concerning vehicle crime and are also known as insurance-approved vehicle tracking systems.
